ARTIST TOWN MEETING
The Arts Guild
hosted the quarterly Artists Town Meeting on Oct.26. Well over twenty
artists from multiple mediums attended, as did City Council Members
Suzie Nakasian and Betsy Buckheit. Updates on local projects were
shared:
- The Arts and Cultural Commission invited
nominations for the Living Treasure Award, introduced new member
Tim Vick, and talked about the Poetry on the Streets Project.
- 'Business
Classes for Artists' are going strong. The Riverwalk Arts Quarter
and Arts Guild hired Springboard for the Arts to offer three
classes focused on pricing work and marketing. Twenty five artists
of various mediums are participating. Funds to help subsidize
tuition were provided by the EDA (Economic Development Authority),
through a grant negotiated by Dean Kjerland and Ann Mosey, with
help from the Arts and Cultural Commission.
- Saturday Market Fair is organizing an
artists' committee and a farmer's committee. If you are interested
in helping in ANY way please contact Kathy Zeman at kzeman@kmwb.net.
- The new
website www.artstown.us
will go live in February - go to the site and get on the email
list! This site is focused on marketing Northfield as an arts
destination. The site has an arts event calendar, artists'
database, featured articles, and advertising opportunities.

2011 marks the
Northfield Arts Guild's third celebration of the Festival of
Wreaths! The display and silent auction of hand-decorated wreaths
starts at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesay December 6th and runs through 3:00 p.m.
on Sunday December 11th.
Wreaths in last
year's festival were sprinkled with peeps, spiced up with cloves and
fruit, filled with nostalgic toys, constructed out of game pieces and
many other unusual embellishments. We look froward to another
year of wreaths that inspire and delight. Proceeds from this
event help support the gallery and allow the Arts Guild to continue
programming events, classes, performances and workshops for the
community.

NOTES FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ANN MOSEY
Excerpts from the
mid-grant report to the McKnight Foundation, who supports the Guild's
operations that are focused on professional
artists.
In 2010-11 the
Arts Guild supported 420 professional artists, providing income
opportunities including juried gallery exhibits, a two day fine arts
festival, and a year-round retail shop. Theater, music and literary
events provided performance and directorial opportunities. Open studio
space, teaching, and professional development were also provided.
Further, the Guild serves as fiscal agent for art projects.
For example, the
Guild is fiscal agent for the Saturday Market Fair. Over the summer
12,000 visitors helped artists make over $120,000. Additionally, the
Arts Guild's Fine Arts Festival, features the work of 65 artists who
estimated $50,000 in sales. Professional visual artists are also
supported in the Guild gift shop and gallery. In 2011 the gallery shifted
from solo exhibitions to group shows. Local artists now exhibit with
regional artists. This provides opportunities for artist to discuss
their work and to create a state-wide network of support. This also
supports our community-wide goal of making Northfield an arts
destination.
Another successful
new program is the A+ Art Club, which brings professional artists
together with young adults living with autism. The unique way these
young adults express their world has inspired the artists to view their
own work in new ways.
Providing support
for professional artists, and for people who want to explore and/or
appreciate the arts, is the mission of this vital organization. It must
be noted that the Arts Guild is working in a more competitive local market,
and consequently there is work to be done to refine our programming. In
its 50 years, the Arts Guild influenced the development of other arts
organizations. For several decades we were 'only act in town'; now we
are 'one among many'. Our challenge is to determine what services to
continue, what we need to let go of, and what new initiatives we shall
undertake.
The Board of
Directors, staff and volunteer committees are hard at work to achieve
our three organizational goals: Financial Vitality; Program Assessment;
Marketing and Outreach Development. The staff is currently working with
a marketing team to design strategies for each program, while also
identifying 'the brand' of overall communication. Re-evaluation of our
programming is also taking place, with the help of each program's
committee members. The upcoming year will be filled with conversation,
imagination and growth. We look forward to strengthening this community
based arts center.

SCHOLARSHIPS & CLASS DISCOUNTS
As an outcome of
the assessment of our class programming, we are re-designing our
scholarship and class discount policies. We will continue to partner
with the CAC in order to provide scholarships for children, but the
amount and number of scholarships available will be changing. Please
keep an eye out for these changes when you register for winter classes.

CVRO - TCHAIKOVSKY'S NUTCRACKER
BALLET
The Cannon Valley
Regional Orchestra (CVRO), under the direction of Dr. Paul Niemisto,
presents their second concert of their 33rd season with Tchaikovsky's
complete Nutcracket Ballet on Sat.Dec. 10, 3:00 p. m. at the Northfield
Middle School Auditorium. This performance will be enhanced with
narration by Philip Spensley, seasoned actor and director from
Northfield, as well as colorful graphics of art and dance for the
entire ballet. (The program will also be presented at the
Lakeville Area Arts Center at 2:00 p. m. on Sunday Dec. 11th) For
several seasons, CVRO has performed the complete ballet live at the
Sheldon Theatre in Red Wing, which is no longer possible.
Mr. Spensley will set the stage for each exciting scene of
this wonderful story involving Clara, her Nutcracker doll, the battle
of the gingerbread soldiers and the mice, the Waltz of the snowflakes
as well as the ballet duet of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her
Cavalier. A delight to children and adults alike, this
performance will be advertised in Northfield through life-size
Nutcrackers (watch for them on Winter Walk and in local banks).
Tickets for the Sat. Dec. 10 performance at 3:00 p. m. are available through
the northfieldartsguild.org, or at the door, or by calling 507-645-8877
(Guild office). Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students
under 18. For more information, visit
