Romeo & Juliet Opens August
6
With
star-crossed young lovers, swordplay, and memorable moments,
Romeo and Juliet is one of the quintessential stories of all
time. As a capstone to our 50th Anniversary Theatrical
Season, the Arts Guild will be offering our production of
Romeo and Juliet in Central Park on August 6-14. Our production
will be presented in promenade staging. Promenade
staging means that there will not be a formal stage in the
park, but the action of the play will move through acting
areas throughout the park, and the audience will be invited to
follow along. These acting areas will include the stone
circle in the center of the park, grassy areas, and even the
playground! Promenade staging is a very energetic and
engaging way to present this familiar story. There will
be, of course, chairs available for those who are not
comfortable standing or sitting on the
grass. Before the show, come to the park for a
picnic! Vendors will be in Central Park from 5-7pm
selling such summertime treats as hot dogs, chips, and ice
cream treats. Everyone is welcome to come to Central
Park for a picnic before the show. Performances
will be held in Central Park on August 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, and 14
at 7:00pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for
students and seniors. Call the
office at (507) 645-8877 or go to our website to order tickets and to find more
information.

In the
Gallery The
opening reception for three new exhibitions will take place at
the Northfield Arts Guild Thursday, August 5th, from 7pm -
9pm. The main gallery features two shows: Inspiration in Colors by
Rose-Marie James and Songs
without Words by John Maakestad, while the Members'
Room presents work by Sheryl
Joy.
In her exhibit, Rose-Marie James delights us
with brightly fused glass pieces. Inspired by the
radiant colors in stained glas s
church windows, James
started taking some introductory glass courses in the twin
cities in 1978. She became so
immersed in the medium that she "had to go researching,
experimenting, and talking to masters of the trade [who were]
willing to share their knowledge." James started the
Dream in Glass Studio in New Prague, and 25 years
later, is still busy creating works, most of which are
commissioned. Her work is also
shown at the Savage Art Studio and Main Artery Gallery in
Jordan, Minnesota, and the Arts Guild gift shop, as well as
having been showcased for several years in Parade of
Homes. "Glass is so mesmerizing," James states. "Each
creation is a rewarding challenge to my
soul."
John Maakestad (Professor Emeritus of
Art at St. Olaf College) also incorporates a passion for color
in his lively abstract oil pastels. "In this
collection...I share in Kandinsky's intuitive
improvisational informal
approach," Maakestad states. He often begins his pieces
with a "linear structure made with straight edge or with the
natural swing of my arm. Other [works] are intuitive
improvisational doodles, refined into a structure,
which then
receives mostly
intense color." The pastels are filled with colorful
shapes that sing as they tumble across the paper. In
addition to receiving commissions for his work, Maakestad has
exhibited at both St. Olaf College and Carleton College, as
well as Luther College, the Mayo Clinic, and other regional
galleries and museums.
Furthermore,
Northfield artist Sheryl Joy will be exhibiting her work in
the Members' Room. In
Passages, Joy has created sculptures of layered and
textured fabric with mixed media elements. She remarks,
"I like to increase the textural interest and richness of
fabric by stitching and gathering, fusing and stitching
again." Joy uses natural and animal imagery to explore
themes of change and transformation, both personal and
cultural. This show will run concurrently with the
James-Maakestad exhibits through September
11th.
The Northfield Arts Guild gallery hours are Monday
through Friday 10am - 5pm and Saturday 10am -
3pm. The opening
reception for three new exhibitions will take place at the
Northfield Arts Guild Thursday, August 5th, from 7pm -
9pm.

Downtown Dance
and Literary Art Saturday August 14 is a day to
enjoy two Arts Guild sponsored performances downtown along
side the Riverwalk Market Fair:
Dance Theater
Company Performance: Come to Bridge Square at 11:15
am to see intermediate and advanced level dancers begin a
series of dances . . . then follow along as the dancers move
down the riverwalk and finish their performance on the walking
bridge behind the Arts Guild building. The dancers are
developing these performance pieces as a part of the Dance
Theater Company Workshop in August (space still available in
this workshop!) Dances will draw from ballet, modern and
jazz dance forms. Follow along and enjoy the dance and
art of a summer day.
Summer Sonnets Literary Arts
Event: After the dance performance,
writers from the area will read from their original poetry and
prose on the deck of the Contented Cow. Take a seat,
have a drink or a bite to eat, and listen to poems and stories
that will make you laugh, think, and remember. This is a
juried reading ... submissions are due August 6. If
you'd like to submit work for the reading you can find details
here.
