Northfield Arts Guild offers many classes in dance, theater, visual arts and literary arts. Classes are offered for different age groups, and class offerings vary throughout the year. Arts Classes for Young Children
for ages 3 - 6
Our popular KidsARTS program is designed specifically for preschoolers, kindergarteners and homeschoolers. Through music, movement, theater skills, puppetry, visual arts and dramatic play, our students receive a well-rounded arts education. We work on coordination, memory, cooperation, spatial and rhythmic skills. The learning of colors, shapes, counting, patterns, lines, forms, texture and design is also incorporated into our classes.
This is a 32 week program running September-May with a 4 week payment cycle.

Mixed Ages Class for ages 0 - 5 with a parent or care-giver
All children are musical! Come spend 45 minutes each week singing, playing instruments, and dancing with your infant, toddler or preschooler in a playful, non-performance-oriented atmosphere. These developmentally appropriate classes guide young children through the crucial early stages of music development and feature great arrangements of original and traditional songs in a wide variety of tonalities, meters, and cultural styles. Tuition includes two professionally recorded CDs, a beautifully illustrated songbook, and a parent guide DVD titled "Music Together at Home: Helping Your Child Grow Musically." Each session teaches a new collection of songs.
NEW! Babies Class for infants up to 5 months
A special Music Together class for parents and their babies up to 8 months old at the start of class. The music activities and materials are specially designed for parents who want to learn as much as possible about music development in babies. Meet other parents of newborns and learn some fascinating music activities you can recreate at home with your baby. This class cannot be repeated.

Theater Arts
for grades 5 - 9
This class will explore acting and movement for the young performer. Activities will include jazz dance, monologue and dialogue work, mask work, and lots of improv! This is the perfect
starting point for the aspiring performer, as well as a great chance to strengthen your onstage presence.

Ceramics for All Ages

In this class you will get the opportunity to learn how to make anything from a chalice that is fit for a king or queen, to a medieval castle. Decorate your pieces using various underglazes and textures.

If you don't need instruction in ceramics but would really like access to a clay studio, then this is the place for you! Open studio gives you access to our potters wheels, extruder, small slab roller, assorted slump molds and tools. A volunteer will be on hand to monitor studio use and help you find what you need. Firings will be done periodically in our low-fire electric kiln.
Open Studio will run in 8 week segments. You can buy a punch card to attend 4 nights or 8 nights.
The 4 week card must be used within 8 weeks. The 8 week card must be used within 12 weeks. Since there are two open studio nights per week, this gives you lots of flexibility as to when you attend. Participants must use the studio during designated open studio hours only.

Visual Arts Classes
This new program is a step up from the fabulous KidsART program. Both classes are multimedia courses where we will discover drawing things from life and our imaginations, explore the wonders of watercolor and tempera paint, and get our hands dirty with hand built pottery. The grade 3-5 class will also have the opportunity to be able to experiment with wheel thrown pottery and work with acrylic paint. We will also learn about aesthetics as well as critiquing our own artwork and the work of famous artists. Both classes will be aligned to meet Minnesota Visual Arts State Standards and taught by a certified Visual Arts Instructor.

Have you ever wondered how to create the illusion of three dimensions on a flat surface? This course teaches you how to use one point, two point, and three point perspective. This course will also show you how to render cylinders, cones, and spheres in three dimensions.

For senior adults
This class will be an open studio format in the activity room of Parkview East. The student may choose their own project to work on over the course of the 4 weeks or beyond in whatever medium they choose-watercolors, acrylics or colored pencil. Individualized guidance will be given by the professional artist leading the class. The teacher will expose the students to a range of techniques, tips and tricks that will help the student fulfill their own project. Participants do not need to be residents of Parkview. Riki Kölbl Nelson is a local artist who has worked in many mediums including watercolor, pastels and acrylics and Chinese brush work.

Senior Center Collaborative Classes
for adults
Under the tutelage of experienced writer, Toni Easterson, you will write memories about food in your life - how it was raised or prepared, tasting it at home or away in a special place . . . any or all of these. Once you have some written ideas, working with artist Jan Shoger, you will create relief print food images, print them on interesting papers, and combine them with your
writing to assemble your book!

Put a life story or stories down to pass on to family members, or write personal histories of a moment in time. Organize your thoughts and writing into a succinct whole. Class will include discussion, participation, and writing outside of class.

By starting with new writing projects or reworking old, stalled pieces of writing, the aim will be getting these into finished formats. We will look at past and present writing with imagination and new eyes. Why do we write, where does it take us? This class will deal with all forms of creative writing including poetry.

Learn how to paint traditional Chinese watercolor painting. This class will cover the "Four Gentlemen" in Chinese painting, the plum blossom, the orchid, bamboo, and ju flower. We will be using the "Four Treasures", brushes, ink, ink stones, and paper.

Cole Porter "did it all," writing all his own music and lyrics. Myrna Johnson, actress, singer and artistic director, will cover stories about Porter's life and work. Porter's musicals include Kiss Me Kate, Fifty Million Frenchmen, and Anything Goes, as well as songs like "Night and Day," "I Get a Kick out of You," and "I've Got You Under My Skin." Video and audio material of much of his music will be presented in this class.

A discovery of the natural inclination to tap the foot with familiar rhythmic motion, adapting the individuals own body weight within space, constituting constant motion. This class will explore the various styles of tap with its music, and sound variations will encourage the joy of tap at any age
