The Arts Guild's exhibition gallery is located on the main floor of the Center for the Arts, located in the historical downtown of Northfield, Minnesota. Established in 1959 and located just 45 miles south of Minneapolis, the gallery's purpose is to provide the community with visual art of high artistic quality, and to provide exposure for professional and emerging artists. All exhibits are free and open to the public.
You can see a long way from the Arts Guild Gallery during the current exhibit: it's full of landscapes. The two artists featured in the main gallery are Becky Jokela of Cannon Falls and Douglas House of Eagan. Stop in and leave the snow behind for a bit while you visit fields of flowers, moody sunsets and autumn panoramas of color. Jokela works in pastels, and House in oil. A detail of his work titled Pines at Sunset: Superior National Forest is shown here

Artwork by Gary Christenson and Maureen Welter
La Petit France, Det vakre Norge features the work of two internationally inspired painters, Gary Christenson and Maureen Welter. Christenson, a physician, is a self-taught painter whose muse is the dramatic landscape of Norway. Welter, a former French teacher and expatriate, paints France through the eyes of a child. Both artists evoke the magic of their respective lands with a knowledge born of intimacy. The image at right is River, Lake, Fjord, & Sea by Gary Christenson.
This exhibit will run June 17 through July 18th, with a special reception on June 25 from 6 - 9 pm. The reception will feature our annual Art in Bloom event, with floral arrangements created by members of the Northfield Garden Club (and inspired by the artwork on the walls).

Rosemount artist Stephanie Molstre-Kotz spent childhood summers in the Lake Agassiz Region in northwestern Minnesota. The name of the ancient lake has become, for her, a personal metaphor for childhood. Her striking and intriguing artwork explores the ways in which "children respond to a landscape differently . . . movement and emotion seem to be uninhibited: Spiritual." The image shown here is a detail from the work titled Albrecht and Agassiz".
Reception: Thursday, March 26, 7 - 9 pm
Some of Jim's Nicer Pots
Jim Haas likes working with clay, and it shows. He doesn't think much of "artist statements", though. His says: "I do not yet know what kind of potter I want to be when I grow up. I hope you like at least some of these pots."

It has been an ongoing wish of the gallery committee to offer an additional space to highlight our member artists throughout the year. This was once offered by a space in the guild called The Other Room.
Thanks to a sponsorship from Steve Schmidt Construction, we now have a moving wall that will create an intimate space within the main gallery, that we are again calling The Other Room.
We are progressing alphabetically through the member artist list contacting artists to exhibit in this space of approximately 10 x 10 x 10. The artist must meet the following parameters:
- Must be a current NAG member
- Must have current work (of the last 2 years), ready to hang (wire back and no zig-zag hooks)
- Must not have exhibited with us in the last 2 years or will not be in an exhibition as a juried artist, in the next year.
- Must have work in reserve that can replace any artwork that is sold during the exhibition. (This enables the patron to acquire the artwork immediately.)
- Work will be on consignment with 40% of sale price going to NAG and 60% to the Artist.
- Length of exhibition is concurrent with juried exhibition.
- Other Room artists may have their own opening reception. This needs to be coordinated with Felicia Peters. Reception and advertising is at the artists expense. The same applies to any postcards, publicity, etc. This is to be generated by the artist.
- Installation will be by the gallery committee. Please bring sufficient work for the installers to choose from. If you desire a consultation of your strongest work, the gallery committee can assist.
The gallery committee is looking forward to working with local artists to display their work in the this newly created space called The Other Room. If you have any questions or comments please contact Felicia Peters at 507-645-8877.
All members of the Arts Guild ages 18 and over are welcome to exhibit their original artwork in the annual members' exhibition. This year's exhibition dates are December 9, 2009 - January 2, 2010.
In order to be included in the Exhibit, artists should bring up to one large or two smaller pieces of their original artwork to the Arts Guild Gallery on Monday, December 7 between 10:00am and 5:00pm. No work can be accepted after this date. Artists should also bring information regarding the title, media, size, date and retail price (including gallery commission, see below) of each piece. (A piece is considered to be large if it is over 4 feet square.)
Work must be ready to hang. Work that is exceptionally fragile or works not ready for hanging might not be able to be included in the exhibit. Please submit your work accordingly.
If you would like your work to be considered for the Exhibit Postcard, please send a digital file to felicia@northfieldartsguild.org by November 9.
This is a good opportunity to sell your work. If an artist chooses to offer exhibited work for sale, the Gallery's commission on the sale will be 40% of the listed price. Artists may also display work that is not for sale.
If you are not currently a member of the Arts Guild, visit our membership page for more information.
